Maybe you’ve been there before. You go to start your day and slide behind the wheel only to find your vehicle doesn’t want to start. Chances are, most drivers will have to deal with a dead battery sometime in their life, so it’s best to be prepared.
At Mercedes-Benz of Hanover, we’re here to help all drivers near Hanover, Plymouth, and Braintree, Massachusetts, learn how to charge a car battery. In just a few easy steps, you’ll be back on the road!
Before you charge your vehicle’s battery, make sure everything is in place for a streamlined, easy process. This includes moving your car to a safe space if needed and turning off electronics like the stereo system and all lighting.
If your battery also needs to be removed before charging, do that, as well.
When unhooking your car’s battery, you’ll want to remove the negative first, then the positive. The negative cable will be marked with a “-” symbol, while the positive will have a “+.”
Gently loosen the negative cable and place it away from the battery and far away from the positive line. If they touch, you risk a charge transferring between the two cables, which could be dangerous. Then, repeat with the positive cable.
You’ll want to clean the battery terminals to naturalize any battery acid and limit any issues during charging. Play it safe by wearing gloves as well as face and eye protection!
Get started by removing debris, dirt, and corrosion with a small cleaning brush and a battery cleaning solution. You can also make your own with baking soda and water.
When the battery is clean, it’s time to connect your battery charger. If it has specific instructions, follow them! If not, here are some general rules:
Once charging is complete, you’ll need to disconnect the charger from your car’s battery when it’s safe to do so (refer to your charger’s instructions).
Start by turning the charger off—don’t touch any controls while the charger is on! Then, remove the positive cable first, then the negative. If your battery had to be removed to charge, reinstall it into your vehicle.
Now, your battery has a full charge and is ready to roll!
